5 states in 6 days
I am happy to report that I was able to add 5 states to my logbook. On Monday 5/25/09 I left Hancock, MA at 4:30 am for Keene, NH where I got a flight in from a field next to Dillant-Hopkins Airport.
Then off to visit friends in Keene, then down to Amherst, Ma visiting friends. Finally reaching Richmond airport and meeting up with Joel Hern who arranged for me to fly out of his home base in RI. We had a wonderful evening flight and he introduced me to some of his friends at the airport. I had a really good time. Arrived back in Hancock, MA at 1:30 AM ( a long day) but 2 states notched. Then the rains came and no flying for 2+ days. Finally caught a short break and got a wet and sloppy evening flight out of William H. Morse State Airport in Bennington, VT. The weather continued to be bad and I figured I was not going to make all 5 states as I had to leave early Sat. morning to return home. But luck was with me. Friday evening it cleared a little and I met a sod farmer who said, sure you can use my huge sod field as your airport. So I was able to get a flight out of the sod field near Sheffield, MA over to another sod field just inside of the CT border 5 miles away where I landed and then set up and flew back to sheffield getting the last 2 states I needed to complete New England. I had a really good time and met some real nice people flying over some of the prettiest areas of the country. ...I must say I really like those large grass sod fields where taking off and landing in any direction on a smooth, flat, soft surface can spoil you.
